One of the main reasons behind products liability law is to ensure that the costs of injuries resulting from defective products are borne by the manufacturers that put the products on the market rather than by the injured persons who are powerless to protect themselves.
Manufacturers are usually in the best position to anticipate some of the hazards associated with the product and to guard against those hazards. Another purpose behind products liability law is to provide manufacturers with an economic incentive to improve product safety, to induce the allocation of resources toward safer products, and to spread the risk of loss.
